The primary responsibility of the Storage Engineer is to ensure optimal performance and stability of the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences’ (NCATS) data storage environment which provides storage of an heterogeneous scientific computing platform supporting all NCATS critical applications. The selected candidate will administer and configure a NetApp based environment, perform manual/automated backups/restores, create reports used to evaluate the effectiveness of the backup environment in addition to managing configure/maintain the virtual/physical systems, use monitoring tools to generate appropriate alerts to undertake problem determination and preventative action and upgrade software. The position works closely with the Windows and Linux team as well as the NCATS scientific DBA. 



  • Configure, manage and support a NetApp based storage appliances, backup and recovery systems of the scientific computing environment for NCATS to make computing programs within the institution stronger and more efficient
  • Monitor and maintain all storage and backup infrastructure including servers and local or external disk arrays.
  • Support monitoring systems such as Nagios by including various shell and Perl script to monitor the NCATS computing environment
  • Troubleshoot backup and restore related problems and server monitoring
  • Administer Netapp E series and FAS series storage systems
  • Configure storage units, storage devices, aggregates, volumes, CIFS and NFS shares
  • Performance monitoring and tuning of Netapp Storage system in addition to SnapProtect backup software and SnapMirror
  • Report to the NCATS IT Infrastructure Team Lead and/or the NCATS IT Manager on the status of project tasks and project risks and issues for resolution
  • Ability to perform knowledge transfer and high level training on NetApp storage and backup best practices to NCATS Infrastructure team
  • Customer performing on-tap to cluster tap upgrade. 
Preferred Skills

Required Skills:

  • 7-10 years of Systems Engineering experience.
  • 4 – 6 years of work experience with NetApp or other enterprise level backup/storage platforms in particular NetApp E and FAS series systems
  • Experience with NetApp SnapProtect, SnapVault, SnapShot and SnapMirror technology
  • Must have excellent knowledge of Disaster Recovery concepts and architectures
  • Be able to bring Multipathing best practices for iSCSI attached LUNs
  • Experience working on both Linux and Windows based systems. Preferable experience with Red Hat based Linux distributions such as CentOS and Scientific Linux
  • Must be familiarization with virtualization systems such as KVM and/or VMware vSphere 5.5
  • Experience with NFS integration and administration.
  • Experience with storage and backup architectures, implementation, configuration and management
  • Must be familiar with DR solutions
  • Ability to understand systems and system concepts; ability to break down complex user requirements into easy-to implement solutions is an important part of this position
  • Experience working with technical and scientific colleagues to implement backup and recovery solutions on heterogeneous computing environments
  • Experience with system and network monitoring tools
  • Excellent organizational skills with an attention to detail
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Sciences or related field at least four years of equivalent work experience
  • Experience with systems configuration at NIH – preferred
